Abstract

The general structure of reasoning (collection of information, development, and evaluation of the hypotheses) in modern medicine is similar to that in the Traditional Iranian Medicine (TIM). However, contrary to a physician in modern medicine, traditional physicians did not only try to diagnose the disease on the basis of patients’ chief complaints. Rather, traditional physicians attempted to determine the general temperament of the patient. Reasoning in the TIM is of the deductive type. Therefore, in the TIM, there is not any disease considered as idiopathic and without any specific etiology. In both modern and traditional medicine schools, there are therapeutic and diagnostic reasoning. However, in the TIM, treatment is defined as the diagnosis is determined. This is while in modern medicine, even when the physician achieves the diagnosis, treatment requires further processing of the patients’ information. This paper addresses reasoning in the TIM. To this end, modern medicine is compared with the TIM in methods of clinical reasoning.

Abstract

The Traditional Iranian Medicine has robust logical foundations, in which it is tried to understand and explain many symptoms and signs with the aid of experience and comparison and with regard to the normal function of the body. The gastrointestinal (GI) system, particularly stomach, is of great importance in the TIM, and prevention and treatment of gastric diseases have been noted in treatment of many disorders of other body organs. In evaluation of the patient for diseases of the GI system, a physician should have a good understanding of anatomy and the relationship among the different organs. Furthermore, based on the TIM, besides having a good knowledge of anatomy, a physician should be expert in the theoretical basis of medicine, especially the seven natural components, to have an appropriate understanding of the diseases and their symptoms. In this way, making use of this knowledge, the physician could provide feasible explanations for the relationships among the disease symptoms. In the TIM, the natural components include elements, temperaments, humors, organs, spirits, faculties, and actions.Furthermore, the common items between TIM and Chinese traditional medicine were addressed. Abstract

Among the most common reasons of the patients’ referral to gastroenterology clinic and other clinics is nausea and vomiting. It would largely affect the normal life of the patient if it is not treated.
Nausea and vomiting are two words in modern medicine usually used to describe the disease. Extensive studies have been conducted in order to prevent and treat the disease. There are also many recommendations in this area. The four words of Nausea, Gheysan, Taghallob-e-Nafs and Puke were used in the Iranian traditional medicine. A main cause and seven partial reasons called "Causes and Reasons" and other factors were mentioned as the causes of vomit and nausea. The Iranian traditional medicine discussed the role of phlegm mixing, the stomach weakness, food corruption in the stomach and the involvement of other organs in the incidence of this disease. Then, the prevention and treatment is established based on the cause of the disease and pathogen phlegm. Sometimes it is possible that the main cause of this disease exists in other organs such as the brain, liver, spleen and other organs (the participation of organs). In this case, the main treatment should address the problem of that organ. The color of vomiting material reveals the phlegm type and substance that caused puke. The relationship between the regurgitation and stomach content and weakness is also mentioned in this medicine. In special cases, voluntarily regurgitation with diagnosis and monitoring by qualified doctor as the prevention and treatment to rid the body of wastes is another issue in the Iranian traditional medicine.

Abstract

Introduction: Constipation is one of the most common side effects of the new style of life. There is no single definition of constipation. Metode and Materials: This study, is a library based and literature review that definite constipation, and compare its different causes in view of Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) with modern medicine Results: causes of constipation in views of ITM summarized in a table with categories and were matched with the causes of constipation from the perspective of modern medicine. Discussion: Definition of constipation in ITM is different from modern medicine, so that in traditional medicine, much earlier diagnosis of constipation is defined and number of normal defecation is more than what is suggested in modern medicine. So, there is no complete matching of these two definition. Overview of traditional medicine in health and disease, is a pragmatic and holistic perspective, while Viewpoint of modern medicine to human, health , disease is positivistic and organ- based (not holistic). As a total view, it seems that some of the causes in ITM is matchable with some in modern medicine. But the causes of constipation in ITM, is more pragmatic and more inclusive. While the causes of constipation in modern medicine, despite the greater accuracy in the classification, have less Generality, so that functional constipation with a prevalence of 90% is failed to properly be classified.

Abstract

Introduction: Cough was one of the most common symptoms in the patient that requires medical attention while heavy expenses were spent on the treatment aims. If the causes and diagnostic criteria wouldn`t be revealed, appropriate medications and effective treatment couldn't be applied. Therefore, from the traditional medicine points of view the purpose of this study was to investigate cough disease with modern medicine. It was hoped that the approach of traditional medicine in the diagnosis of cough disease and its treatment were less expensive and easier.
Methods: This study was a review on cough disease, incidence and causes. The Noor digital library was applied for searching traditional books with cough keyword, and also MD consult E. books database for modern medicine references.
Results: Cough disease is a necessary act to protect the airways and lungs of humans. Previously, cough reflex was related to the lung or as a result of the participation of the other organs. Coughing causes can be divided into three parts. In traditional Iranian medicine, patients with complaining of cough were asked questions based on humidity or dry cough at first, then about the pain presence and at the end, the time of the intensity of coughing to characterize the cough type.
Discussion: By regarding the classification of cough disease in traditional Iranian medicine can be helpful to choose the effective drug treatments. Consequently, it seems that the traditional medicine scientist references and also using the modern medicine diagnostic devises can dramatically reduce the costs and complications in the recent treatment procedures.

Abstract

Background and Purpose: Holy Quran has mentioned sleep in several verses and has attributed the possibility of human sleep at night and during the day to divine signs and has known it as the reason of feeling comfortable. In the study of Islamic narrative resources the word “sleep” has been observed 6031 times and some words such as “to sleep”, which is among its synonyms, have been observed 2639 times. According to av Sina the first priority in “six essential principles” is exercise(sport) , the next priorities are eating and drinking, and sleeping is afterwards . To evaluate the importance of sleep, it’s sufficient to mention that deprivation of sleep in several days in a row will lead to death. So both traditional and modern medicine have paid particular attention to it.
The adequate and required sleep for adults during the day is 6 to 8 hours, although sleep timing and its structure vary according to the age and so forth. Currently 30 to 45 percent of people suffer from one of the sleep disorders. Insomnia is the most prevalent sleep disorder which might be temporary, short-term, long-term, and chronic and the root causes need to be assessed closely. Chronic, recurrent insomnia forms a fairly rampant group of sleep disorders. In the incipient insomnia, at least for one month, the main complaint is the difficulty at the beginning and the continuity of  sleeping as well as the deficiency of comfort and alacrity after sleep.
Methods and Materials: The methodology of this study has been gathered comprehensively from libraries and has used traditional and modern medicine resources and scientific articles. Subjects related to the reasons of insomnia and symptoms and complications stemming from insomnia have been introduced in both isms and with comparative study of these two, it has been ultimately concluded that the discussed reasons and complications for insomnia.
Conclusion: The widespread medicine, traditional medicine and Islamic resources have offered comprehensive issues related to sleep, sleep disorders, reasons and its solutions. Insufficient sleep and insomnia have been argued with the devised term “ sahr ” in traditional medicine resources and the term “insomnia” in modern medicine resources. The reasons for insomnia in traditional medicine are pain, sorrow, happiness, fury and so forth and in modern medicine insomnia stems from internal diseases or mental diseases along with innumerable complications.
