Journal of Islamic and Iranian Traditional Medicine jiitm 2008-8574 2016 7 1 Comparison of the effects of medicinal capsules Shilan with Metformin on ovarian cysts in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome A. Asadi M. Kamalinejade S. Arezaei dr_aasadi2013@yahoo.com Background and Purpose: Poly cystic ovary syndrome is seen in about 5%-15% of women during reproductive years, and is one of the most important cause of oligomenorrhea and infertility. The common treatment in modern medicine is ocp and in permanent cyst is ovary tissue save surgery. in the other side, use of metformin that increases tissue sensitivity to insulin and decreases insulin level has exetended in recent years. Prevalence, side effects, unsuccessful treatments and increase unnecessary surgeries in permanent cysts persuaded us to compare the effect of shilunum capsule on the regression of ovarian cysts in pco patient with metforming effect. Methods and Materials: a prospective clinical trial was undergone at the infertility clinic of Mahdie hospital. Twenty patients wer selected based on sonographic appearance of ovaries. We divided them in two groups and gave one group metmorfin and another shilunum capsules. Then again all of those sonographic parameters evaluated and compared with each other. Results: The results showed that both of these regimes are effective on decrease the number and size of cysts but the shilunum was more effective. 87/5% developed normal sonographic appearance with shilunum and 50% with metformin. on the other hand, the duration of treatment with shilunum capsules was only 2 weeks in comparison with 3 months in metformin. Also, these capsules didn`t have any side effects. Conclusion: results showed the effective role of shilanum appearance in pco patients. But we need more studies with more samples about these effects, also evaluation of clinical effect of shilunum is recommended. Journal of Islamic and Iranian Traditional Medicine jiitm 2008-8574 2016 7 1 Recognition of Sandarac Resin Nature in Old Scientific Texts A. Nemati Babaylou A.nemati@aui.ac.ir M. Azadi Bouyaghchib F. Najafi Background and Purpose: Sandarac as tree resin has attracted attentions in Islamic medicine in the past and it has been mentioned as a treatment for visual disturbances, opening bronchi, toothache painkilling, filling out the rotten teeth, obesity, hemorrhoids, bloody diarrhea, tinnitus treatment, etc. Many of ancient medical scientists and gemologists have described the features of this matter, including physical characteristic, chemical characteristic, the location to produce it. It has also been compared with such materials as amber, but many disagreements can be seen when comparing their descriptions to each other. In new works, sandarac resin extraction is limited to a species of pine family named Tetraclinis articulata Vahl, found in the north of Africa specially Moroco, and another spices was introduced in Australia named as Calitris Quadrivalvis Vent whose resin is known as Australian sandarac. The aim of this study is to identify the exact sandarac in ancient scientific sources and matching it with the resin material in the present time.  This will make it possible to scientifically recognize it and accurately apply it. Materials and Method: In this research, the research method is descriptive-analytic and the data from the studies of ancient and modern texts are criticized and investigated based on adaptive logic. Results: The findings in this study showed that whatever in ancient texts had been mentioned as sandarac is different from nowadays sandarac. In fact, in the past sandarac was referred to a category of diterpenic resins including Zanzibar copal, colophany, and sandarac which are different from each other in terms of geography, origin and chemical structure. In old written texts, they have been introduced as different species of sandarac. Conclusion: The results showed that, in ancient Arabic culture there was not specific and different words to refer to copal or sandarac, and copal is only cited as equivalent of crystalline sandarac in more recent sources. Sandarac name introduced in Farsi from Arabic. Sandarac name introduced in Farsi from Arabic. Sandarac name introduced in Farsi from Arabic. Sadeghi M. okhovati okhovati.maryam@gmail.com Background and Purpose: Investigation of scientific output is known as one of the most important indicators of research and knowledge production. With respect to the importance of berberis in traditional and modern medicine, this study aims to investigate the research conducted on berberis medicinal plant in authoritative databases and the contribution of  the medical field during 1993 to 2013. Materials and Method: This is a descriptive-analytical research in which indexed documents in Web of Science and Scopus were analyzed by analyst softwares of the two databases. Pearson coefficient was calculated to determine the relationship between scientific contribution and citation rate. Results: 803 and 1278 documents were retrieved from Web of Science and Scopus, respectively. In both databases, “Karimov, A” had the most papers. “Khimiya Prirodnykh Soedinenii” included 26 documents in Web of Science and 44 ones in Scopus, therefore, they were published the most papers on berberis. “China Sciences” university published the most papers in Web of Science and “University of Connecticut America”had the most papers in Scopus. The highest rate of papers published belonged to U.S and the dominant subject in Scopus was pharmacology and in Web of Science the dominant subject was internal medicine. No significant relationship was observed between the number of authors and the citation rate. Conclusion: The prolific authors, influential journals, active institutions, and leading countries were identified. The findings present a suitable pattern for researchers and policy makers in Iran and abroad to improve the quantity and quality of research in this field.
