Journal of Islamic and Iranian Traditional Medicine jiitm 2008-8574 2014 4 4 Introducing a new category of headache derived from Iranian traditional medicine A. Rezayat M. Yavari Introduction:  Headache is a prevalent and disabling condition that affects people in all age groups worldwide and degrades the quality of life and job performance. However, the etiology of a large group of headaches is still unclear and this have prevented efficient treatments. There are several case reports of people with headache that suffer from other medical problems as well. This was the key directed us to present an important headache group that is not classified by the International Headache Society (IHS): “The participatory headache”. In the Traditional Iranian Medicine, the participatory headache [“Sodae mosharekati”] is defined as the headache not originated from the head and neck; rather, the headache is caused by another organ dysfunction/disease. Treatment of this type of headache completely depends on the treatment of the original affected organ. Methods: Reviewing available references from Traditional Iranian Medicine on participatory headache as well as the books, papers and case reports from the conventional medicine about headaches with unknown etiology, we made a comparative study in this field that is presented. Results: Our investigation demonstrated that there are significant evidences in the conventional medicine literature for different types of the participatory headache, as classified in traditional medicine into the following categories: 1- Headache caused by the stomach: The scientists in the field of the conventional medicine also believe that headache is a frequent feature of functional gastrointestinal disorders. 2- Headache with kidney origin: There are several reports of the cases with kidney disease which also suffer from headache. 3- Headache with liver origin: our literature review showed relationship among migraine and liver disease. 4- Bowel, bladder and uterus origin of the headache is also well documented in the patients with IBS, bladder and uterus disease. Conclusion: Recognizing the participatory headache as described in the traditional medicine, can help researchers to establish new criteria to improve headache diagnosis and treatment protocols. Momeni A. Rezayat M. Yavari Introduction: Good nutrition is one of the most important factors in a healthy pregnancy, which is related to mother’s health, rate of pregnancy complaints, fetal growth and the delivery complications. In recent decades, the use of alternative and complementary medicine has increased considerably. Using herbal products in order to avoid the chemical drugs side effects is increasing specially among pregnant women. However arbitrary use of these herbs without considering their side effects would endanger the health of the mother and the fetus. Methods: Reviewing available references from Traditional Iranian Medicine on pregnancy as well as the books, papers and case reports from the conventional medicine about using herbs during pregnancy, we made a comparative study in this field that is presented. Results: Principles of nutrition during pregnancy in the conventional medicine resources are based on micro and macronutrients and calorie intake. The complications due to lack of the nutrients or poor calorie intake in pregnant women is discussed in the nutrition text books in detail, but the use of herbal supplements is not well explained reflecting the limited research in this field. In Iranian traditional medicine resources healthy life style during pregnancy including the use of food and herbal drugs is well documented. It is recommended for pregnant women to use ‘Saleh-al-kimus’, subtle and mild foods and avoid to use special herbs which are abortogenic or teratogenic. Conclusion: Despite the benefits of herbal products, misuse of them may lead to severe complications so increasing the knowledge of physicians and pregnant women about the side effects of herbal drugs during pregnancy considering the information of traditional medicine resources, ensures mother and fetus health and improves public health. Journal of Islamic and Iranian Traditional Medicine jiitm 2008-8574 2014 4 4 Water drinking rules: differences between traditional Iranian medicine and nutrition science A. Faraji Esburezi M. Yavari Introduction: Despite the advice "Drink at least eight glasses of water a day" is ubiquitous and the nutrition resources insist on that, there are not enough scientific documents to support this advice, and according to the traditional Iranian medicine (TIM) it is even very harmful to drink such amount of water a day. TIM practitioners believe that, water drinking is just allowed when one is really thirsty. In TIM textbooks, Forbidden drinking times and the adverse effects of drinking water more than the body need are explained in detail. In this study, the viewpoints of conventional nutrition science and TIM about this issue are compared and discussed.  Methods: Reviewing available references from TIM as well as the books, papers and case reports from the conventional medicine about water drinking, we made a comparative study in this field that is presented. Result: Valtin H. et al in a paper published in 2002, challenged the recommendation of "Drink at least eight glasses of water a day". He believes that not only there is not enough evidence for this recommendation, but also this suggestion may be harmful. After publication of this article the Institute of Medicine revised its previous protocol and changed this advice and suggested the "thirst" is the best symptom to show our need to water; which confirms the rule that had been mentioned by Avicenna. Another important point to consider about nutritional guidelines is that these items are prescribed the same for all people in the conventional medicine; however the drinking water rules are different in according to people temperaments (mezaj) in the TIM. Conclusion: In conclusion the authors recommend not following the hydrotherapy or drinking suggestions without scientific evidence-based reports and encourage researchers to investigate possible side effects of excessive water intake in animal models and then human studies. water drinking traditional Iranian medicine conventional medicine 2014 3 01 359 369 http://jiitm.ir/article-1-303-en.pdf

Journal of Islamic and Iranian Traditional Medicine jiitm 2008-8574 2014 4 4 Āvishan Gh.R. Amin M. Khanavi B. Zolfaghari R. Rahimi A. Soltani M.R. Shams Ardakani M. Shirzad O. Sadeghpour A.M. Taleb M. Karimi M. Keshavarz M.B. Minaei Āvishan, a genus from the family of Labiatae, has been identified in Iranian traditional medicine (ITM) with different names such as “Sa‘tar”, “Ābshan”, and “Kahlik oti”. Three kinds of this plant, “Barri”, “Bostāni” and “Jabali”, have been considered in the ITM. In this paper, we tried to determine the scientific names of these three kinds, according to their characteristics mentioned in the ITM resources and also propose appropriate Persian names for these scientific names.  It was concluded that the characteristics of “Barri” in ITM are matched with the two species of Thymus including T. daenensis and T. pubescens, those for “Bostāni” seems to be corresponding to T. kotschyanus and “Jabali” is matched to Zataria multiflora. The suggested Persian names for these species are “Āvishan Denāī” for T. daenensis, “Āvishan korkdār” for T. pubescens, “Āzorbeh” for T. kotschyanus, and “Āvishan Shirāzi” for Zataria multiflora.
